The Complex Gentleman's Guide for Young Men Who Wish To Look Fresh and Exude Coolness - Smellin' Right

Let Me put you on some game...

Looking right is always important for a complex gentleman but what most guys fail to realize is that smelling right is just as important if not more important. Now it's not enough to just keep yourself from smelling funky, you have to smell good. Really good. Ladies love a guy who has a pleasant aroma around him. It's a subtle attraction that keeps them interested even when you aren't saying anything.

Now there are different components that go into every bodies scent. You want to think about the body wash or soap you're using. Definitely think about the deodorant, and most importantly the cologne that's used. That can make or break the scent you are looking for.

Soap - Most guys don't even think about the soap they use but it's actually a very important cog in the entire process. Whether you use bar soap or liquid soap you want to make sure it doesn't have too strong of a smell. Fragrant deodorant companies (ex. Axe, Tag) make a lot of soaps now too. It seems like a good idea to just roll with this but some of these scents can be too overpowering. And when you mix it with other stuff that has smell (deodorant, cologne) the resulting scent may not mix too well. I like to stick with Irish Spring. It does the job but not everybody knows that I use it when they smell me walk down the street.

Deodorant - Ok the first thing you want to do is make sure your deodorant is an anti-perspirant. For those of you who don't read the back or deodorant cans it means it stops you from sweating. This is very important. . You want to stay cool and dry. Heat plus smell = bad odor.

(Fun Fact #34 - Sweat itself has no odor. What makes you smell when you sweat is the bacteria on your skin mixing with the sweat)

Right Guard is my favorite choice when choosing a deodorant. Most guys use Axe or Tag or another fragrant deodorant in a can. I usually try and stay away from those and not use them too much. It seems like a great idea but when applying it the smell can come on a little too strong. Plus I find the scent to become annoying after a while and some women hate the smell of these faux colognes. Some guys seem to think that Axe is a great substitute for cologne and this might have ringed true in high school but c'mon, you're an adult now, buy some damn cologne.
Cologne - Ok having the right cologne can be ruined by the over application of it. Moderation is the name of the game here. You don't want to use to much, plus this stuff is expensive. You want it to last right? I apply cologne in three key places.

1. At the Neck, a little to the back, close to the ear. Perfect placement from when you receive a hug.

2. At the wrist, close to the base of the palm of your hand. This will sort of move the smell around when you wave your hands, also it's good placement for when you put your arm around ole' girl.

3. At the crotch. Cuz if you do everything else right, you just might have someone smelling that area. Amongst other things...HA!

A trick I use to make sure my cologne won't smell too strong is that I apply Cologne under my top layer of clothing. Meaning if I'm wearing a button-up and I have an undershirt, I'll put the cologne on the undershirt, then wear the button-up over that. If I'm wearing a jacket then I apply it to the button-up. If I'm wearing a t-shirt I just put it on my body.

In terms of choosing a cologne that's up to you. There are a million under the sun. Just make sure you choose one that you really like. Stay away from cheap stuff, in this case it's usually better to spring for the nice stuff. It'll be worth it in the end. My favorite colognes are Kenneth Cole and Old Spice (the old school version in the little bottle). It's such a classic smell. Plus if it worked for your dad and his dad, it can probably work for you. It got you here didn't it?

A couple other things you want to think about

1. Make sure you're clothes are clean. Dirty clothes do smell.

2. Make sure you keep you clothes away from the kitchen. When you are cooking the smell of the food gets into fabrics. If you are ironing or anything make sure its away from the smell of food.

Follow these rules and you'll be looking fresh and exuding coolness in no time.

Trust me...I'm a gentleman
