The Complex Gentleman's Guide for Young Men Who Wish To Look Fresh and Exude Coolness - Wearing the Right Tie

Let me put you on some game...

One of the most important accessories a man can have in his closet is a tie. It's actually more of a staple than an accessory. If you are about your business then you gotta have more than a couple ties.

More importantly, it's not enough to just own any type of tie, you have to own the right tie and know how to wear it. In the last chapter we talked about buying ties, now we'll talk about wearing them.

Solids

When you have a solid shirt its much easier to mix and match. Solid shirts allow you freedom to wear a bold tie or one with a cool pattern that you can't normally match with your patterned shirts. Save the bolder ties for your simpler shirts. Don't be a hero. Most times its better to keep it simple. A clean uncomplicated look goes a lot further than a loud busy look.

Conversely you want to match your solid ties with the shirts that have designs. The important thing to think about when doing this is to match the right colors. To do this look at your shirt and find the most pronounced color, try picking a tie that compliments that pronounced color.

Stripes

Now we all remember the rule when it comes to wearing ties is to never wear a stripped shirt with a stripped tie. We've heard that it just doesn't work. It's a big no-no. When you wear a tie that has a lot of designs and a shirt that has a lot of designs you look like an optical illusion.

For the most part you want to follow this rule but if you are a little savvy about style you can make it work. If you wear a stripped shirt and wish to wear a striped tie make sure the stripes aren't the same size. You also want to make sure that they aren't going in the same direction. Also make sure that either the stripes on the shirt or the stripes on the tie are a little more suble than the counter part. Like a white shirt with light blue stripes can work with a tie that has a bolder stipe design..

What you definitley want to avoid is wearing a striped jacket with a striped tie and striped shirt. It's just too much. Stay away from that

So those are some simple rules to follow when mixing and matching ties. Things can get a little more complicated when you bring in plaid and checkered designs but we can tackle that later. You always want to keep it simple.

Follow these rules and you'll be looking fresh and exuding coolness in no time.

Trust me...I'm a Gentleman
